TRI-COLORED LAKES AT MOUNT KELIMUTU
There are many amazing volcanos around Indonesia and as part of our journey with Sky Scanner, we're so excited to take you to see the crater lakes at Mount Kelimutu. Mount Kelimutu is a volcano located in Flores Island just 50km away from Ende. This volcano is famous for its three craters, two of which are side by side and the other about 1 kilometer from the other two craters. Visiting these magical crater lakes can be challenging but it's all worth it and we recommend you do this the next time you plan your trip to Indonesia!
The best way to get to Mount Kelimutu is to fly to Ende, find a simple hotel to stay the night because trust us, this has alot to do with getting up early. From Ende, take a drive to the drop-off point of the mountain and everything else happens on foot from there. The best time to arrive is by 4:30am to reach the sunrise at the top. The hike isn't hard, in fact, beginner hikers will have a fairly easy time. The road to the very top is paved with some steps, you may stop to rest during the hike but it is advisable to stay on the trail due to landslide warnings.
Bring clothes to keep you warm, at 4:30 am the temperature may reach down to 10 degrees celsius (this is cold for us!)
Kelimutu has 3 craters, two of them are directly beside each other and the third crater lake is 1km away from the other two. The wonderful thing about these lakes is that they change color periodically. Each of the lakes may change from torquoise blue, emerald green, red or even black. Scientifically speaking, the color changes that happen to the lakes is due to various chemical reactions from volcanic activity.
Locals believe that Kelimutu is a sacred place where souls and spirits come together after death. Each of the three lakes have a purpose, the first lake which is named Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai which is often emerald green in color is where the good spirits go. The second lake, named Tiwu Ata Polo is usually blood red or black and is where the bad spirits are taken and the third lake, located farther from the two is called Tiwu Ata Mbupu is the final resting place of old men and women.

To wake up early, hike with barely any food or energy in our bodies made everything worth it in the end. It's amazing to be able to explore more of what Indonesia has to offer, and to be honest, we've never been disappointed with this beautiful country.
